The Curtis Institute of Music and the Purple Project for Democracy announce an international competition to create a new work for Ensemble 20/21, Curtis’s contemporary music ensemble.
Through this competition, the partnering organizations aim to explore how art can increase engagement with democracy.
Applicants are asked to submit a one-page project proposal to create a new work that:
- addresses the core mission of the Purple Project for Democracy to “enhance people’s understanding and appreciation of, and engagement with, democracy and democratic values”
- is no longer than ten minutes
- involves collaboration with a partner (e.g. choreographer, visual artist, electronic musician, or writer)
- draws from the following ensemble (one per part): flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, harp, piano, percussion (up to two players including timpani), violin (up to two players), viola, cello, contrabass, solo voice
The winning selection will receive a cash prize of $10,000 USD plus a performance of the new work during the 2020-2021 season at Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, US, which will be recorded and live-streamed. The $10,000 award includes all production expenses and commissioning funds.
